Louisville Relocation Guide: Major Louisville Employers

This is Post #3 in my comprehensive Louisville Relocation Guide.  Parts 1 & 2 are linked at the bottom of this post.  This post will focus on Louisville's major employers as well as some successful smaller companies.  Chances are good that if you are considering relocation to Louisville that you have employment lined up prior to your relocation, however, it's always good to get to know your city, so this installment will focus on the main economic drivers in Louisville, Kentucky.

Employment numbers were taken from Business First's 2012 Book of Lists unless otherwise noted.

Private Sector -

1.  United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS)

- UPS is the largest local employer with 20,117 employees.  UPS specializes inlogistics and air, ocean, & freight services.  They ship A LOT of packages worldwide.  UPS bases its largest air-sorting hub, WorldPort, in Louisville, Kentucky.

2.  Humana, Inc.

- Humana is located in the heart of downtown Louisville, and employs 11,000 people.  Humana provides health insurance and wellness services.

Local Address:  500 W. Main St. Louisville, KY  40202

3.  Norton Healthcare, Inc.

- As one might expect from the name, Norton is the areas largest healthcare provider, from hospitals to immediate care centers to diagnostic offices, and physicians offices.  Norton employs 9,658 people locally.

Local Address:  Several locations locally including downtown and East Louisville.

4.  Ford Motor Co. - Kentucky Truck Plant & Louisville Assembly Plant

- Ford is a staple of Louisville's employment offerings.  The car maker is always near the top of the local rankings in terms of employers.  In 2012, Ford employed 8,696 locally across two plants.  Locally, Super Duty Trucks, F-250s & F-550s, Expeditions, Navigators, and Escapes are built here.

5.  Kentucky One Health, Inc.

- Kentucky One Health is yet another healthcare provider, specializing in occupational health, psychiatric care, rehabilitation medicine, outpatient care, and hospitals, among other things.  Kentucky One employs 5,898 people.

Local Address:  200 Abraham Flexner Way, Louisville, KY  40202

6.  GE Appliances

- GE is one of Louisville's most-recognized brands.  Louisville is home to design, manufacturing, sales, service, distribution, and marketing of water heaters, dishwashers, French door refrigerators, & washers.  GE employs 5,000 people locally.

Local Address:  Appliance Park, Louisville, KY  40225

Other notable employers:

Yum Brands, Inc.

- Quick-service restaurant giant supports its fast food restaurant brands, KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut.  Corporate headquarters are located in Louisville.  YUM! employs 1,558 people locally.

Brown-Forman Corp.

- Adult beverage producer and marketer.  Brands include Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Jack Daniel's Whiskey, Early Times, Old Forester, and Finlandia Vodka.  Employs 1,196 people in Louisville.

Papa John's International Inc.

- Pizza of course!  Headquarters for the quick service pizza proprietor are located in Southeast Louisville.  Papa John's employs 918 people locally.

Hilliard Lyons

- Employing 446 people in Louisville, Hilliard Lyons is a financial services company providing financial guidance and wealth management.
