Heine Brothers Coffee Shop St. Matthews Louisville KY

Louisville is becoming know as one of the country's top restaurant towns.  The city seems to open, close, and reinvent restaurants overnight.  What about coffee?  Well, coffee's a solid venture as well here in the Derby City.  Here are 5 coffee shops we recommend, and if there's one substance The Thomas Group of Keller Williams Realty Louisville East thrives on, it's coffee!

1.  Heine Brothers Coffee (multiple locations):  The original independent local coffee shop that was way ahead of its time, Heine Bros has been serving Louisville since 1994(!).  I spend way too much money at Heine Brothers.  My morning ritual is to make a large cup at home, drink it while I'm driving to drop my sons off at school, and then pick up another from Heine Brothers on my way to the office.  My main shop is pictured above.  It's the Heine Brothers located at 4305 Shelbyville Road.  However, several of their locations are worth a visit.

The Mothership is the original which is located at 1295 Bardstown Road in the Highlands.  It's a true neighborhood coffee shop which means parking is tricky, but assuming you can get a parking spot on Longest Avenue or nearby, or you can arrive via another method, it's very much worth a visit.  A bonus is that this location is connected to Carmichael's Bookstore, which is one of the last bookstores anyone's ever seen!  (Sort of kidding, but not really).  Independent coffee shop + independent bookstore = an awesome Louisville outing!

Another location I frequent is Heine Brothers' original St. Matthews location at 119 Chenoweth Lane.  The reason it's always an interesting trip is that here you are liable to see Louisville's elite business leaders and politicians on any given morning discussing pressing issues alongside high school students and seminarians gulping down coffee while studying and utilizing the free wifi.

It's also worth noting that Vint Coffee Shops were purchased by Heine Brothers.  In Clifton, Vint serves great coffee, and also features half-priced bottles of wine on Thursday nights (as of this writing) if you're into that sort of thing.

2.  Sunergos Coffee (Multiple Locations):  Sunergos is critcally acclaimed and has been a local favorite since 2003.  My "home" shop is located in Germantown at 2122 S. Preston Street, however, the Sunergos story began in Louisville's charming Beechmont neighborhood at 306 W. Woodlawn Avenue.  The coffee is always great, and the barristas have great music taste!  You can also pick up some beans to take home with you from the St. Matthews Farmer's Market in spring & summer!

3.  Quills Coffee (Mulitple Locations):  Quills is another independent and growing coffee behemoth.  It's now got locations in Southern Indiana and Indianapolis, so things are happening!  I have only ever been to the original location in the Highlands at 930 Baxter Avenue which is in the heart of the "it" Louisville entertainment corridor.  Quills works with community coffee cooperatives in places like Costa Rica in order to lift up those communities as well as provide excellent quality in your cup.

4.  Please & Thank You, 2341 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville, KY  40206:  This shop had a location in NuLu until recently though its website still says the East Market Street location is operating...anyway, bottomline here is very good coffee and the very best chocolate chip cookies known to humankind.  Located in Crescent Hill, parking is a bit of a challenge, but those cookies...

5.  Scarlet's Bakery, 741 E. Oak St. Louisville, KY  40203:  OK, yes, it's primarily a bakery, but it also serves Good Folks Coffee, which is headquartered across South Shelby Street from Scarlet's in Louisville's trending Shelby Park neighborhood.  Scarlet's story is even better than the coffee which is saying a lot.

Let's talk, ladies & gentlemen, about music. That's right, pure, challenging, melodic, choppy music. This is not Top-40 radio, it's not your granddaddy's bluegrass either (as good as that is), and it's certainly not conceived from 2015's… more
